Today I’ like to talk about my favorite piece
of art, this is The Lovers by René Magritte, if you don’t know who is Rene, he
was a famous Belgian surrealist artist and the reason why I admire his work, is for depicting
ordinary objects in an unusual context and
giving new meanings to the “familiar” things.
I saw the Magritte’s art when I study the psychoanalysis
(study of the unconscious) with my class, and his work intrigues me to learn
more about the pictures, (this is why The lovers as the paint I prefer), this
oil from canvas was painting in 1928 in Paris, France and has many analyzes
about the couple in this work, because their faces are covered, so when
Magritte was 14 years old his mother committed suicide by drowning. He
witnessed her body being fished from the water, and her wet nightgown wrapped
around her face (as the same of the painting).
This is why the people speculated that this trauma
inspired the paintings, but Magritte are disagree with such interpretations, because
he denied any relation between his work and his mom death and he wrote:
“They evoke mystery and, indeed, when one sees
one of my pictures, one asks oneself his simple question, what does it mean? It
doesn’t mean anything, because mystery means nothing either, it is unknowable”.
It was amazing how a simple painting can arouse
most complex meaning!!!! The viewer can be impacted by it or not depending of
interpretation, for this reason Rene Magritte was a genius and The Lovers was
one such paintings to be inspirational, controversial and provocative, that art
intrigues and provokes thought.
